How to Add Backlinks?

How to add a backlink in HTML or WordPress, and how to get other sites to add a backlink to yours, with a clear explanation of manual backlinks and where adding links yourself goes wrong.

“How to add backlinks” can mean two different things. It can mean the technical question of how to put a link on a web page, or the strategic question of how to get a link to your site added on someone else’s page. This guide answers both, and explains why the second question is the one that matters for SEO.

If you own a page and want to link to another site, the process is simple. Remember that when you link out, you are creating a backlink for the other site.

In HTML

A link is an anchor tag with an href attribute. The visible words go between the opening and closing tags. For example, the link text “guest posting services” would sit inside an anchor tag whose href points to the destination page. You can add a rel attribute to describe the link: nofollow, sponsored or ugc. Google’s page on qualifying outbound links explains when to use each one.

In WordPress

  1. Open the post or page in the editor.
  2. Select the words you want to turn into a link.
  3. Click the link icon, or press the keyboard shortcut for links.
  4. Paste or search for the destination URL.
  5. Open the link settings to choose whether it opens in a new tab and to mark it as sponsored or nofollow, depending on your editor and plugins.
  6. Save or update the page.

In other editors

Most website builders and email tools have a link button that works the same way. Select text, click the link icon, enter the URL and save.

Always use descriptive anchor text. Words such as “click here” tell readers and search engines nothing about the destination.

Adding a link on your own page to your own site is an internal link. It helps navigation and SEO, but it is not a backlink. A real backlink has to be placed by someone else, on a site you do not control. You cannot simply add one. You have to earn it, ask for it or buy it from a publisher who agrees. For background, see what backlinks are in SEO.

Ask for it

If someone mentions you without linking, send a polite message. Name the page, say what you do and suggest the exact page to link to. Writers often agree, because adding a link makes their article more useful.

Contribute content

Guest posts give you a place to include a link naturally. You write the article, the publisher adds it to the site and your link appears within the content or the author bio. Our guest posting services let you choose a site from a list.

Ask for a link insertion

If a relevant article already exists, you can ask the publisher to add a sentence with your link. This is the logic of niche edits, where the existing article already has traffic and history.

Use partners and suppliers

Businesses you work with may have partner or client pages. A link there is often relevant and natural.

List yourself in genuine directories

Industry bodies, chambers of commerce and quality local directories can provide useful links. Avoid directories that accept anything for a fee.

Create something worth linking to

Tools, data and clear guides earn links without asking. Over time, they can become your best source of natural backlinks.

Manual backlinks are links placed by a person after looking at the site and the page, not by software. A manual backlinks service researches sites, contacts publishers and places links one by one. This is slower than automation but produces better results and fewer risks. Manual link building is the same idea. We say more in how to create backlinks manually.

Some websites invite anyone to add links: blog comments, forums, profile pages, directories and wiki-style pages. Adding links there is easy, which is why it is also nearly worthless. These links are often nofollow, are heavily spammed and may be removed. Doing it in bulk can look like spam. Google’s spam policies describe link spam, including comment spam and automated link creation.

There are exceptions. A genuine profile on a respected industry platform can send relevant visitors. A thoughtful comment that adds value to a discussion may get you noticed. But neither should be the core of your plan.

How to choose where to place your efforts

Ask four questions about each opportunity.

  1. Is the site relevant to my topic?
  2. Does it have real readers?
  3. Would the link make sense to a reader?
  4. Is the publisher likely to keep the page live?

If the answer to any of these is no, skip it.

Anchor text and destination

When you ask for a link, suggest the destination page and a natural anchor. Brand names, page titles and short descriptions work well. Avoid exact-match keyword anchors on every link. A varied profile looks more natural.

Choose the destination carefully. Sometimes the best page to link to is a useful guide, not a sales page. A guide is easier for a publisher to link to, and you can lead readers to your services from there.

Check the result

After the link is added:

  • Open the page and confirm the link works.
  • Check the anchor text and destination.
  • Note the rel attribute.
  • Record the link in your tracking sheet.

If you want help

If you prefer not to do the outreach yourself, a backlinks service can handle research and placement. Make sure it shows you sites in advance, writes real content and lets you approve each link. Our buy backlinks page shows the sites, metrics and prices before you order.
